Sworn Translation, Notarized Translation, and Apostille Legalization

For official applications, a translator's signature might be enough, or you might need a notary certification or an apostille. The institution processing your application always decides which approval is mandatory.

Purpose and approving authorities for certification levels
Process Description When Is It Required? Who Does It?
Sworn Translation A sworn translator signs the document to declare it is an accurate translation. Often enough for basic document requests by universities and official institutions. Sworn Translator
Notarized Translation A notary public officially certifies the sworn translator's signature and authority. Frequently required for documents submitted to government bodies. Notary Public
Apostille Verifies the signature and seal on a Turkish public document so it is recognized in other member countries. Required when submitting a Turkish document to an institution in a Hague Convention country. Relevant Authority

Legalization by Destination

  1. Translate & Sign A sworn translator translates your document into the target language and signs it with a wet signature.
  2. Notarization A notary public certifies the translator's signature, giving the document official status.
  3. Foreign Legalization The final legalization step depends on the destination country's treaties.

Apostille An apostille is attached, removing the need for consular procedures in Hague Convention countries.

Consular Legalization Depending on the destination country, you may need approval from the governorate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or the relevant consulate.

Because our office is in Ankara, we can follow up on all necessary legalization procedures, including ministry and embassy approvals.

Acceptance criteria vary by institution. To avoid delays, we recommend confirming current approval requirements with the authority receiving your documents.

How Are Translation Prices Set?

For document translations, we base the cost on the character count, using the standard unit of 1,000 characters. We quote the translation fee and certification costs as separate items before we begin. Interpreting services are priced based on the project details.

  • Language Pair The languages involved. Pricing depends on the specific language combination.
  • Character Count The number of characters in your document. We use this directly to determine the translation volume.
  • Document Type The nature of the document. Standard paperwork and specialized legal or medical texts have different requirements.
  • Legalization Type Official procedures like sworn translation, notarized translation, or apostille legalization.

Notary fees follow the official government tariff. Apostille and similar legalization fees are set by the respective institutions, not by our office.

Cost and Time Summary

  • Translation Fee Based on character count
  • Notarization Based on official tariff
  • Apostille Based on institution fees

We clarify the scope and cost of the translation as much as possible before starting.

During office hours, we usually share the price and delivery time within 15 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to your questions about translation, pricing, and legalization procedures below.

What is the difference between sworn translation, notarized translation, and apostille?

A sworn translation is translated and signed by a sworn translator. The receiving institution may ask a notary public to certify this translation, which we call a notarized translation. For the document to be valid in a country that is party to the Hague Convention, an apostille may be required. Review the necessary steps on our document legalization page.

Can you follow up on notary and apostille procedures for me?

Yes, with your authorization, we take care of the official approval procedures on your behalf. We follow up on the notarized translation step, as well as legalization at the governorate, district, or consulate level as required by the authorities for your translated documents.

How is the translation fee calculated, and when can I get a price?

Prices depend on the language pair, document type, required certification, and the character count based on a 1,000-character unit. When you send your documents during weekday office hours, we usually provide the cost and delivery time within 15 minutes. Get a quote to start immediately.

Do you provide same-day translation for urgent documents?

Yes, we can deliver urgent documents on the same day, depending on translator availability and the working hours of official authorities for procedures requiring certification. Once we review your file, we give you a clear delivery time. Get a quote directly for cost and timeframe details.

I am not in Ankara. How can I send you my documents?

Send your files directly by email to info@balkantercume.com. If the receiving authority requires the original document, their specific submission rules apply. We deliver your finished and certified documents by courier within Ankara, and ship them to addresses elsewhere in Turkey.

Do I need an appointment to bring documents to your office?

You do not need an appointment. Walk into our Kızılay office on weekdays between 09:00 and 18:00 to hand over your documents and start your procedures face-to-face. Find our full address in the office section.

Do you provide simultaneous interpreting for meetings or conferences?

Yes, we plan interpreter teams in the required languages for your international events, business meetings, and congresses. If needed, we also organize the rental of technical systems like booths and headsets. Talk to our team for simultaneous interpreting details specific to your event.

Which languages do you translate, and do you translate between languages other than Turkish?

We provide translation services in 60+ languages with Turkish sworn translators. We evaluate translation requests between two non-Turkish languages on a case-by-case basis. Find all the languages we translate on our page.

Can I get an interpreter at official institutions or notaries in Ankara?

Yes, we assign interpreters for official procedures involving non-Turkish speakers. For each request, we confirm the availability of interpreters who meet the specific authority's rules. Find more information on our sworn interpreting for notary transactions page.

What should I look for when choosing a translation office for my official documents?

You should check that the office works with sworn translators, can follow up on certification procedures for you, and explains costs clearly up front. A translation office suited for your job should know the receiving authority's rules and guide you properly. Get a quote from us to learn the cost and delivery time for your specific documents.
